AI CANDIDATE SCREENING

Screen every applicant. Reject no one by machine.

Pyro scores every application against criteria written for the role before any CV arrived, shows what matched and what is missing, and turns the gaps into interview questions. It never rejects a candidate on its own: a person decides.

What is AI candidate screening?

AI candidate screening compares each application with what a role needs, so recruiters don't have to read every CV first. The difference that matters is what you get back. In Pyro it is the reasoning, what matched and what is missing, not a bare number.

HOW IT WORKS

From application to interview question.

  1. 01Criteria first

You agree what good looks like for the role before the posting goes live. Every applicant is measured against the same written criteria.

  2. 02Every application scored

Each CV is compared with the role and scored, so the strongest matches rise to the top of the list.

  3. 03The reasoning shown

Pyro shows its working across skills, seniority, domain and ownership: what matched, and which required skills are missing.

  4. 04Gaps become questions

What the CV leaves open is not held against the candidate. It becomes a question for the interview.

  5. 05Invite, not reject

Pyro can invite candidates who clear the bar you set to an AI interview. It never rejects anyone.

THE EVIDENCE

A score with its working.

Every score comes with the reasoning behind it, and every gap is turned into something to ask rather than a reason to reject.

WHY SCREENING GOES WRONG

A bare score is a guess you cannot check.

Most screening tools rank candidates and stop there. The recruiter cannot see why one person scored 74 and another 61, so the number is either trusted blindly or ignored.

Pyro shows its working. In the example above, the score is high on skills and seniority, and the one open question, which decisions were his, goes to ARIA's first round instead of becoming a rejection.

FOUR WAYS TO SCREEN

Knockout questions, keywords, meaning and criteria.

  • Knockout questions reject anyone who answers one question the wrong way. Fast, but blunt: one answer decides.
  • Keyword filters keep CVs that contain the right words, and miss people who describe the same work differently.
  • Semantic matching compares the meaning of a CV with the role, so different wording still matches.
  • Criteria-based screening scores each application against criteria written for the role, and shows its reasoning. Pyro combines meaning with criteria, and never rejects anyone on its own.
A GOOD RESULT

What a good screening result should show you.

  • A score you can compare across every applicant for the role.
  • The skills that matched, and the required skills that are missing.
  • A view of seniority, domain experience and ownership, in words.
  • What is still open, as questions for the interview.
  • Nothing that decides for you: the next step is a person’s call.
WRITING CRITERIA

Criteria that screen well.

Screening is only as good as the criteria behind it. Pyro agrees them with you before the posting goes live, and these habits make them work harder.

  • Separate what the role needs from what would be nice. Too many “requirements” put good people off and blur the screen.
  • Describe outcomes, not just tools: what the person must have done, at what scale.
  • Keep criteria the same for every applicant to the role, so the scores can be compared.
  • Leave out anything that is not about the job, such as age or background.
  • Write the criteria once and let them carry through: posting, screening, interview and decision.
THE CANDIDATE’S SIDE

Screening that is fair to the person applying.

Every applicant to a role is measured against the same written criteria, and nobody is turned away by a machine. A gap in a CV becomes a question in the interview, so a candidate who did the work but described it briefly still gets the chance to explain.

Candidates also see where their application stands as it changes, so nobody is left waiting without word.

COMMON MISTAKES

Where screening usually goes wrong.

  • Rejecting on a single missing word, when the experience is there in other words.
  • Ranking without reasons, so nobody can explain the shortlist.
  • Moving the bar from candidate to candidate.
  • Treating a gap as a verdict instead of a question for the interview.
  • Letting software make the final call.
IN PYRO

How a screened application reaches you.

  • The application arrives through your careers page or the Pyro jobs board.
  • Pyro reads the CV and scores it against the role’s criteria.
  • You see the score with its reasoning: what matched, and what is missing.
  • If the score clears the bar you set, Pyro invites the candidate to an ARIA first round.
  • You decide every next step, and your name goes on the record.
FAIRNESS AND THE LAW

Screening that a person can stand behind.

Screening is where hiring law and AI meet most often. Hiring is a high-risk use under the EU AI Act, and anti-discrimination law applies to decisions made with software. Pyro is designed so a person can explain every outcome.

  • Every candidate for a role is measured against the same written criteria.
  • Pyro never rejects a candidate or moves anyone between stages on its own.
  • Diversity data is kept apart: never shown to decision-makers and never sent to the AI.
  • Postings are graded for biased wording before anyone applies.
THE RULES

The rules that apply to automated screening.

Several laws now cover software used in hiring decisions. The EU AI Act treats AI used in recruitment as high-risk. In the United States, New York City requires bias audits and notice for automated employment decision tools, Illinois regulates the use of AI to analyse video interviews, and Colorado has passed its own act on high-risk AI systems.

The common thread is explanation and human oversight: being able to say why a candidate was ranked as they were, and keeping a person responsible for the decision. That is how Pyro is designed. Your own legal obligations remain yours, and your legal adviser is the right person to confirm what applies to you.

WHO IT IS FOR

Screening for agencies and for startups.

Agencies screen for many clients at once, often from a database of past applicants. Pyro scores those CVs against each client’s criteria, so the same person can be weighed for several roles.

Startups usually screen without a recruiter. Pyro gives founders a ranked list with its reasoning, and invites the strongest candidates to a first-round interview, so the founder’s time goes on the final conversations.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Questions to ask any AI screening vendor.

  1. 01Does it show why it scored a candidate the way it did?If not, nobody can defend the shortlist. Pyro shows its working.
  2. 02Does it reject candidates automatically?Auto-rejection is where screening goes wrong. Pyro never does it.
  3. 03What happens to a gap in the CV?A gap is a question, not a verdict. Pyro sends it to the interview.
  4. 04Are the criteria written down before screening starts?Otherwise the bar moves per candidate. Pyro agrees them before the posting goes live.
  5. 05Is diversity data kept away from the AI?It should never reach the model. In Pyro, it does not.

“First it asked questions relevant to the JD and then specific to my experience. So everything was relevant.”

QUESTIONS

Asked often.

Does Pyro reject candidates automatically?

No. Pyro can invite candidates who clear the bar you set to an AI interview, but it never rejects anyone or moves them between stages on its own.

What does the screening score look at?

How closely the CV matches the role, and on paid plans a written assessment of skills, seniority, domain and ownership, with matched and missing skills listed.

Is AI screening biased?

It can be, when it learns from past decisions. Pyro measures every candidate against criteria written for the role, flags biased wording in postings, and keeps diversity data away from its AI. A person decides.

Can we set our own bar?

Yes. You set the score that triggers an AI interview invite, per role.

Does it read CVs in other languages?

Pyro can read CVs written in other languages. Postings, screening and interviews are in English today.

Is screening on every plan?

Every plan scores every application. The written reasoning comes on paid plans.

What is the difference between AI screening and keyword filtering?

Keyword filters keep CVs that contain your words. AI screening compares the meaning of each CV with the role and, in Pyro, explains what matched and what is missing.

Can candidates find out why they were not taken forward?

Pyro keeps the reasoning behind every score and names the person behind every decision, so a recruiter can always explain an outcome.

Does screening use a candidate’s photo, age or gender?

No. Diversity data is kept apart: never shown to decision-makers and never sent to the AI.

How accurate is AI candidate screening?

Accuracy depends on the criteria. Pyro shows its reasoning for every score, so you can check it against your own judgement on the first applicants and adjust the criteria if something is off.

Can I screen candidates already in my database?

Yes. Search the CVs you already own, add the matches to a role, and they are screened like any other applicant.

How fast is screening?

Applications are scored as they arrive, so the list is ready when you open the role.

What happens to candidates below the bar?

Nothing automatic. They stay on the list with their score and reasoning, and a recruiter decides what happens next.

Can I change the criteria after screening starts?

Criteria are agreed before the posting goes live so every applicant is measured the same way. If the role changes, agree new criteria and the screening follows them.

Can screening find candidates who use different words?

Yes. Pyro compares the meaning of each CV with the role, so different wording for the same experience still matches.

Do I still need to read CVs?

Yes, but far fewer, and with a head start. Pyro ranks every application with its reasoning, so you read the strongest first and know what to look for in each.

Does screening work for roles with few applicants?

Yes. Every application is scored against the same criteria however many there are, and you can add matches from the CVs you already own.
